Coco: A New Disney Classic

This study examined media's role in ethnic socialization within Mexican-heritage families, focusing on how parents utilized the Disney film Coco to discuss cultural traditions with their children. Involving 23 parent-child pairs with children in kindergarten through fifth grade, the research found that ethnic identity, ethnic socialization, and media orientation influenced parent-child conversations about the film. Those with higher scores in ethnic identity and socialization discussed how Coco's cultural representation resonated with their own experiences. The study shows that using movies like Coco helps families talk about their traditions. It found that people with a strong connection to their culture discuss how the movie reflects their own experiences. This helps us see how Dia de los Muertos is changing as people use different ways to communicate and as cultures change over time.
